Data visualization

  1. a) Tableau

These three visualizations are generated by searching the tweets with hashtag #ArtBasel on Twitter during 20th to 28th March, which refer to tweets over time, top-10 tweets and user activity.

  1. Tweets over time:

The three tweet types were relatively less active before March 26, but soared to the peak on the same day, March 27, one day before ArtBasel opened, and after that all three tweet types showed a visible decline. During the whole period, the variety of mentions and original tweets were not as obvious as the retweets. Thus, it is obvious that retweets played an important role during the early promotion period. Just like we always finish the assignment before deadline, most of the accounts chose the final day in promotion period, March 27, to do a sudden spurt as well.

2.User Activity:

As this chart shown, artbasel, the official account of this great event, accounted for the most active user during the research period, with the largest number of tweets. However, it is user called next77 and _Official_Store that post the most original tweets and retweets respectively.

Thus, I export the full data of next77 and _Official_Store’ tweets and found out that all of the text they made were used to promote for Artbasel. As the screenshot of the data shown, all the original tweets(78) that generated from user next77 with the same content, which is ‘ #Artbasel #graphicdesign #art #artwork#artcollector #artgallery #gallery #creative… https://t.co/1y9HtoTfhz.’, tweeting only hashtags, which are related to Artbasel.

Moreover, the retweets of user named _Official_Store were all retweeted from Artbasel’s official account. I therefore went to Twitter to look at these two accounts and it is interesting that both of the accounts are no longer existed. I therefore assumed that these two accounts were actually of the same camp as Artbasel, they were helper of Artbasel to do the promotion.

  1. Top-10 tweets

In order to evaluate what what did people discuss about ArtBasel mostly on Twitter, the top-10 tweets graph, as shown above, are generated from Tableau. Retweets obviously account for the most tweets and artist @JamesJaneArt ranks the first in it, posting that ‘Finding my drawing at Kaikai Kiki Gallery at ArtBasel with #Barbasel. It is obvious that this artist had art works shown in the fair and tried to promote the gallery he belong to.

  1. b) Voyant

From the first two visualizations, Artbasel undoubtedly enjoys the greatest visibility, being mentioned with a number of 3225 times. Apart from it, the host city HongKong accounts for the second largest visibility.

The frequent occurrence of “hong” and “kong” may equal to “hongkong” as these two words obviously separated from the city name “hongkong”. And the same situation may as well apply to “art” and “basel”, as they may refer to “artbasel”.

From the second visualization of Voyant, which reflects keywords of users’ tweets, it is reasonable to conclude that people mainly discuss about ArtBasel (3225 times), galleries(218), artist (208) and some elements of artworks, such as ‘painting’ (96), ‘canvas’(110), ‘drawing’(83), ‘graphic design’(81), ‘sculpture’(69), ‘graffiti’(76), ‘acrylic painting’(79). Besides, the word ‘booth’, mentioned for 179 times, was the specific exhibition location emphasized, stating the booth number at the fair and asking people to visit. For instance, ‘Find us at Booth P8 @ArtBasel Hong Kong! You can see a full list of our programmes during Art Basel here: https://t.co/PNLwv5oav5. See you there! #ArtBaselHongKong ’.

  1. d) Gephi

This visualization was generated by analysing the mentions with hashtag #ArtBasel on Gephi. Those labels showed in the picture are the twitter ids with top-17 weighted degree and some significant labels were enlarged as to stress their importance among the clusters.

Apparently, the most visible label is ArtBasel, the official account of this modern and contemporary art fair. The rest clusters around are generally with the same scale, covering press like TheArtNewspaper, Hong Kong Free Press(HongkongFP), and magazines such as ForbesLife and Oculadotcom (a magazine headquartered in Hong Kong for discovering contemporary arts).

Apart form them, some renowned artists who have their works being presented in the fair account for several visible clusters, such as artist JamesJeanArt, painter jpcartpart, sculptor Piaiaroberto, team LookLateral. Furthermore, Art critics or participants of art workshop or events in the fair, cajunsoulifre74 and RealBaiLing are also involved in it. The last cluster named Galerie Lelong NY is one of the sponsors for hosting this year’s ArtBasel Fair in Hong Kong.

All of these accounts circling #ArtBasel have one similarity – to promote and enjoy this amazing art event.
